YankeesのHOPE Weekの一環で、70歳の女性がBat Girlを務めました。
小さい頃からヤンキースファンだったというGwen Goldman。
バットガールがやりたくて、10歳のときにヤンキースに手紙を送ったそう。
でも、返信はNo。
こんな返事だったそうです。
“While we agree with you that girls are certainly as capable as boys, and no doubt would be an attractive addition on the playing field, I am sure you can understand that it is a game dominated by men a young lady such as yourself would feel out of place in a dugout.”
丁寧な文体ではあるけど、はっきりとダグアウトは
女性がいるところじゃないよと言っています。
でもGwenさん、この手紙を額に入れて飾っていたそう。
今年、Gwenさんの娘が、この手紙をヤンキースに送ったところ、
現GMのBrian Cashmanの目にとまり、Honorary Bat Girlとして
彼女を球場に招待することを決めました。

Here at the Yankees, we have championed to break down gender barriers in our industry. it is an ongoing commitment rooted in the belief that a woman belongs everywhere a man does, including the dugout.
多分スタッフレベルでは女性も増えてきていると思いますが、
今年、マーリンズのGMにKim Ngさんが就任して話題になったものの
マネージメント側だと管理層、選手側だとコーチなどではまだまだ女性は珍しい。
Honorary Bat Girlは小さいことだけど、
でもこういうことを率先して行うチームっていいなと思いました。
そしてこういうところに選手が参加しているのも素晴らしい。

Gwenさん、当日はピンストライプのユニフォームに身を包み、
球場を見て回ったり、選手と話をしていたところ、
ブーン監督に始球式をやることを伝えられ、始球式を行いました。
